1968 Martin Luther King Jr. assassinated an April, or so, ago… Charleston church shooting

love note tanka

love note: I watch the fire boogaloo on your verses… you are the night that illumines my language

wordless night tanka

in a wordless night the wall does not dissolve-- one more harmless day I lie stuck in the middle of light, ready to vanish

I wake up tanka

I wake up with her towering over me a touch of blood dripping from her mouth conscious of nothing

there are days tanka

Image
there are days of sunshine and azure as well as dark ineffable  monsoons covering my skin

I’m over sixty tanka

I’m over sixty, the moon is the same but my body is tattooed with time… let me finish this spring painting

when I finally tanka

when I finally break the cage, rapture … on a broken night the more I fly the more I burn

the truth is tanka

the truth is I am better on my own… starting over another day under the smelting heat

I live hand to mouth tanka

I live hand to mouth knowing hope and history are inmates-- encircled by strings I dance on desert sands

she works for a God tanka

she works for a God with no need to rummage--. you better leave before I get medieval on you with a cup

Mahvash Sabet - Prison Poems

Image
These are two poems by   by Mahvash Sabet .  One was translated by PhD Pedro Perez Osorio and the other is a very loose translation of mine.

it's a matter of time tanka

Image
it's a matter of time before I gulp the shadows of discord-- too many strangers knocking at the door

the wound closed tanka

Image
the wound closed as I moved out of my tribe— standing  on the edge of the world  my legs chant mantras

Mother tanka

Image
the glimmer of a dragonfly's  dainty wings-- mornings  were never mine, Mother

grief-eaters tanka

Image
grief-eaters interrupt my sleep-- resting on the bed my legs begin to shake

The Long Healing Prayer

Draga (Drag Queen)

Image

your skin tanka

Image
your skin,  a holy grail  I need to find--  nightfall  and I'm on my knees

if only the pain tanka

Image
if only the pain  would subside—  nothing really recovers  when storms come  there’s no near or far

our voices tanka

Image
our voices  didn’t matter  we spoke  from within,  letting loose our balloons
